Scott Sherman has taken it upon himself to compile a list of 50 Oy vey-inducing members of the tribe--from politics, entertainment and white collar crime--who make it tougher than it already is to be a Jew these days. Notables include:
Bernie Madoff: Where to begin? Life is hard enough without having to be concerned that your esteemed brethren are really sleeper-schmucks lying in wait, biding their time for the perfect moment to completely ruin your life. Laura Schlessinger: Referred to herself in a Los Angeles Times Magazine profile as a prophet. Let's be nice and call that a stretch. Eliot Spitzer: Oh if only we could return to the days when Jewish mothers could call their little aspiring politicians 'The Next Eliot Spitzer!' without it sounding absolutely disgusting. Barbra Streisand: Those imitating her shtick can't be tuned out because, much to our chagrin, they live with us. Think of all the poor young Jews who had to go to school unwashed because their sister's shower-based rendition of Papa, Can You Hear Me? took forever to complete. Judge Judy: Who thought it was a good idea to give a Jewish grandmother a television show in which her opinions are legally binding? Releasing the wrath of bubbie onto the world is a cruel, cruel thing to do. Leonard Nimoy: A Jew playing a pointy-eared half-alien? Everybody thinks we're strange and foreign enough as it is!

Oz Vehadar's undertaking of the great project of re-editing the Talmud Bavli - an undertaking recently completed - undoubtedly represents one of the most positive and important revolutions in the Torah world over the past few centuries. The love of Torah - our hidden treasure - and the yearning to learn it, have always been firmly entrenched in the Jewish people, and today, thank G-d, this love is ever the more evident in the thousands of Batei-Midrash, yeshivas, Kollelim, and Jewish homes around the world. However, before the tremendous achievement of the Oz Vehadar institute, there had never been the opportunity of learning from a Talmud so precise, so clear, both user-friendly and sophisticated, allowing both a basic level of comprehension and an advanced level of in-depth study. The Gemara’s text in the Oz Vehadar Talmud Bavli has been re-edited and refined meticulously, and the same attention has been devoted to the traditional commentators on the page. All these – including the Rosh and his own commentators, the Maharsha, Maharam and Maharshal, the 2nd edition of the Maharsha, the Maharam Schiff, the new Yalkut Mefarshim, the Rif and his commentators, the Mordechai, and the Tosefta with its commentators – have been re-edited, with beginning words set in boldface, and with references and notes added. The following essays have been added to this edition that is not included in the student edition of Gemara: 1. Mishnayos (with Pirush HaRambam, Rabeinu Ovadya M'Bartenur, Tosfos Yom Tov, Tosfos Chadashim, Tosfos R' Akiva Eiger, A collection of commentaries printed in the Vilna Talmud at the end of the tractate ) 2. Tosfos HaRosh Hashalem 3. Tosfos Rabeinu Peretz Hashalem 4. Tosfos Rid 5. HaAruch Al HaShas (by Rabbi Nathan Bar Yechiel) with glosses and comments on changes in the text, etc. 6. Ayin Mishpat Hamalei - in which all the Leshonos of the Rambam and the Shulchan Aruch are mentioned in the Ayin Mishpat on the Daf
Bava Kamma - Schottenstein Daf Yomi (Midsize) Talmud Bavli
During the many years of publishing the Schottenstein Edition of the Talmud, students of Gemara asked for a smaller, lighter version of the full-size text. We listened and responded with the Daf Yomi edition. Every word, indeed every feature, of the full-size edition is here in a compact 7" x 10" size - and printed on lighter, thinner paper.
Like the full-size edition, the Daf Yomi edition of the Schottenstein Talmud Bavli is available in 73 volumes. The Daf Yomi edition is popular with travelers as well as with Torah students on a budget. Besides its appealing size, it's also a great value-priced at about 1/3 less than the full-size edition. In Talmud classes and congregations throughout the English speaking world, the Daf Yomi edition of the Talmud Bavli has become a very popular resource.
Torah learning is everywhere today - "when you are at home or on the road." So, in addition to your full-size Gemara at home, you can have a "travel Gemara" for times when you need something more portable.

“Be a blessing, my child, be a blessing.” They were words whispered from a father to his child as she confronted the horrors of the Holocaust. That child would grow up to be the world’s beloved Rebbetzin, Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis.
Be a Blessing shows us how she chose to “be a blessing” in the darkest of times and most horrific of places. In Bergen-Belsen. In a Swiss boarding school, as a penniless refugee, separated from her family. In a hospital bed in San Diego.
Written as she recovered from a difficult and painful accident, Be A Blessing sings out with faith, hope, even in times of despair.
In these pages we will hear Rebbetzin Jungreis speaking in Madison Square Garden, in a U.S. Airforce base, in a hospital room where she lies in terrible pain. We will hear her speaking to individuals looking for help or comfort. We will hear her speaking to herself, a young Holocaust survivor. And, most importantly, we will hear her speaking to each one of us, our concerns, our hopes and fears and questions.
From the Rebbetzin we will gain tips for a better marriage and for being better parents. We will learn how to find the mission our Creator has chosen for each individual, and how to make room for Hashem in our hearts. And we will discover how to take our personal mission, use it to “be a blessing” and convert darkness to rays of light.
In Jewish tradition, before parents journey to the next world, they bless their children. In this, the Rebbetzin’s final book before her passing, she has blessed all of us – because she felt all of G-d’s people were her children –with the greatest blessing of all: To be a blessing.
Be Fruitful! The Etrog in Jewish Art, Culture, and History
The etrog is a curious fruit. The Bible (Leviticus 23:30) commands its readers: “And you shall take for yourselves on the first day beautiful tree-fruit (peri etz hadar), palm fronds, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days.” Native to the Far East and adapted to the culture of the eastern Mediterranean, the rituals of the etrog are among the very few that are dependent upon a particular environment for growth that Jews have maintained in their vast dispersal from the origins of their law, heritage, and collective existence in the Land of Israel. In their wanderings across the globe, the etrog has remained part of Jews’ practices, an indispensable part of the annual rhythms of the Jewish harvest festival, Sukkot, the Feast of Booths.
This collection of essays by leading scholars of Jewish studies explores the long and engaging story of the etrog from Biblical times to the present, with explorations from medieval and early modern Europe, the Ottoman lands, the United States, and Israel. Together they tell a tale of home-away-from-home, of wandering and belonging, of tradition and adaptation. The etrog’s story is one of environment, climate, and agriculture; of religious law and change; of commerce and cooperation; of borders and crossings; of fine art; of experimentation and innovation in Jewish art, culture, and history.

The Beis HaLevi, Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, is revered as the founder of the Brisker dynasty, Rosh Yeshivah of “the mother of yeshivahs” - Yeshivas Volozhin - and author of the classics Beis HaLevi Responsa and Beis HaLevi al HaTorah.
Among his writings is a brilliant essay on bitachon, trust in Hashem. It was not published during his lifetime, and remained in a manuscript form with family members for close to a century, before it was made available to the public by his great-grandchildren.
Now, at last, English-speaking readers can access the treasures of faith and trust that were hidden away for so many years. The Beis HaLevi on Bitachon includes the entire original text; a flowing, elucidated translation; a wide-ranging commentary that explores the many facets of emunah and bitachon, drawing upon the works of dozens of Torah sages; and an Overview by Rabbi Nosson Scherman. “Insights” appear throughout the book, bringing a contemporary focus to bitachon, and fundamental topics are dealt with more in depth in the appendix section.
The Maharal discussed the importance of reciting pesukim about bitachon every day. This volume includes a special section with such pesukim compiled by Rav Zundel of Salant, together with a prayer for strengthening our bitachon.
The Beis HaLevi on Bitachon gives us clear answers to many of life's most important questions. What is the proper balance between hishtadlus, effort, and bitachon, trust? How should a person react in times of trouble? Why does fear have no place in a Jew's life? What are the many benefits of bitachon - in this world and the next?
The Beis HaLevi on Bitachon is the hidden treasure - finally revealed! - which will bring us to the faith and trust so vital to our lives.
When the new rav of Brisk, Rav Yosef Dov Ber Soloveichik, known as the Beis HaLevi after his renowned three-volume work of responsa, focused his matchless genius on derash and aggadah, the result was the classic sefer, Beis HaLevi, on Bereishis and part of Shemos. Combining his analytic eye and his awesome mastery of the entire spectrum of Torah sources, Rav Yosef Dov Ber created an essential text of Torah hashkafah. He applies his penetrating analysis to such major topics as the nature of exile and the Jewish people’s acceptance of the Torah.

BETWEEN THE MOUNTAIN AND THE LAND LIES THE LESSON
In his latest book of poetic Midrash, Abe Mezrich breathes new life into the last third of the Torah. This third act, beginning with Moses sending spies into the Land, becomes the setting for poetry that fully engages the mind and the heart.
With clarity and beauty, Between the Mountain and the Land is the Lesson explores fundamental Jewish questions: What does it mean to be sacred? To be a community? And, especially, what does it mean to be a sacred community that both flees from and longs for Revelation?
