Jeremiah was given the saddest and hardest of all missions: For 40 years he warned a stubborn nation that they were heading for destruction unless they heeded his pleas to repent. The Temple alone could not protect them! Egypt s promises to defend Jerusalem were worthless! Only Hashem could help them and He would, but only if they repented! What was the response? Jeremiah was ridiculed and reviled. The scroll of his prophecy was slashed and burned. And he was actually imprisoned and threatened with death for saying the unpopular. But the underlying message of Jeremiah is that destruction will be followed by redemption. Israel will always survive and thrive again. There may be a Nebuchadnezzar, but there will also be a Messiah. Israel s enemies will disappear in ignominy. And no matter how far Israel may fail they always remain the people of Hashem and Hashem remains their God. So ultimately Jeremiah is a Book of hope and inspiration. This brilliant, elevating work belongs in every Jewish library! Hashem gave Ezekiel a dual assignment. He was to present a scathing picture of the sins that were causing the Destruction, and he was to comfort the despondent nation with the assurance that their enemies would be punished and Israel would emerge from exile with unprecedented eminence. Ezekiel prophesied in Babylonia, warning the exiles not to repeat the sins of Jerusalem, but assuring them that Hashem was with them even in exile. His message applies to us, as well, because the key to Israel's survival and success is Hashem - and, as in Ezekiel's time, that depends on how sincerely we repent and how loyally we serve Him.
The underlying message of Ezekiel is that destruction will be followed by redemption and the eternal Third Temple. Israel will always survive and thrive again. There may be a Nebuchadnezzar, but there will also be a Messiah. Israel's enemies will disappear in ignominy. And no matter how far Israel may fail - they always remain the people of Hashem and Hashem remains their God. So ultimately Ezekiel is a Book of hope and inspiration.

The Chumash of choice for synagogue and home!
For decades, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik lectured on Chumash in a variety of venues. From his lecture hall at Yeshiva University, he analytically explored the p shat of the Chumash. In Boston, he philosophically expounded the hashkafah of Yahadus. At the Moriya Synagogue, he brought the Chumash alive with an incisive approach to classical d rush. The Rav Thinking Aloud on the Parsha showcases all of these styles in a collection of shiurim spanning 30 years. All of the English shiurim are transcribed verbatim to provide the reader with a full appreciation of the Rav's style. Added to this are transcripts of personal discussions that provide insight into the way the Rav analyzed Chumash. Find out how the Rav approached questions such as: 1. The Midrash says that Hashem created and destroyed many worlds before creating ours. Why couldn't Hashem "get it right" the first time? 2. Who was Hashem talking to when He said, "Naaseh Adam"? Why should Hashem need to consult anyone else? 3. Why did Avraham protest the destruction of Sodom, but quickly went along with killing his son Yitzchak? 4. If Yitzchak wasn't sure which son was in front of him, why not call in a servant? Why give a b rachah at all? 5. Why was Yaakov distressed about killing Eisav? We have a principle of self-defense: if someone comes to kill you, you must kill him first.
